MAINTENANCE – Before embarking on a well-earned holiday, the reigning world champion in the decathlon took the opportunity to speak candidly with Le Figaro about the previous year and the upcoming Games.
On September 19, on a barge in the Seine, Bridgestone introduced the team of athletes that it would continue to sponsor up until the 2024 Paris Games. Kevin Mayer, the current world decathlon champion, was sandwiched in between the fencer Manon Apithy-Brunet and the judoka Amandine Buchard, and the para athlete Mandy Francois-Elie. A little over a month after having to withdraw from the European Championships, where he had wanted to try the crazy bet of continuing after the Worlds in July, the decathlete, who had twice won the silver medal at the Games in 2016 and 2021, took the time to reflect on his year. Since you had to withdraw from the 100-meter decathlon competition at the European Championships on August 15, how have you been doing, Kevin?
Kevin Mayer: It’s going quite well, and I appreciate your help. After competing in the decathlon at the World Championships in Eugene, which proved to be more taxing on my body than I had initially anticipated, it took me a significant amount of time to recuperate.
