Tottenham was defeated by Sporting Portugal (2-0) on the second day of the Champions League on Tuesday at the José Alvalade stadium. The last minutes of the game were crucial for Tottenham’s loss, as they allowed two goals to be scored in rapid succession.
After being reserved for a long time, Tottenham eventually showed that they were unable to be accurate enough to hope for anything on the turf of Sporting. Paulinho scored the first goal for the Lions on a corner kick in the 90th minute, and then Arthur Gomes scored on a rush in the 90+3 minute mark. The Lions were solid throughout the few highlights that the Spurs had, and they were dangerous on the counterattack. Hugo Lloris had been doing an outstanding job up until that point, but he was powerless to prevent these two flashes from occurring. After claiming their second win in a row, the sporty and seductive team seized the initiative in group D (the OM group), where they now hold the position of a group leader. First, it was the striker Paulinho who got things started with a furious header off of a corner kick (in the 90th, 1-0), and then it was the midfielder Arthur Gomes who handed Sporting the definitive win with a clear shot after the game had ended. After the first two days of competition, Sporting sits atop Group D all by themselves with a perfect 2-0 record. With three points, Tottenham is in second place. The other match in the group will take place between Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt at 9:00 p.m. on the evening of the same day. Both of these teams lost on the first day. The Sporting Lions destroyed the Spurs in the first half of the match. The team coached by Antonio Conte swiftly gave up the lead after having little to no possession of the ball, particularly in the first half hour. Just before halftime, the Spurs were able to thank Hugo Lloris for laying down nicely to take away a shot in the end but in full surface (45th +1). This allowed the Spurs to take the lead. After coming out of the changing room, the Londoners attempted to amp up their game with two opportunities from Emerson. First, the Brazilian team signed a recovery from the right side on a free kick that was released by the Spanish goalie in the 48th minute. After that, they pushed Adan to work with a header on a good cross from the left side (49th). After that, Tottenham began to relax their hold on the game, leaving themselves more open to Portuguese counterattacks.
Even though Dejan Kulusevski entered the game in the 72nd minute and provided a significant amount of energy to the English assault, the Spurs were no longer able to be dangerous. Heung-min Son had been quite ineffective up until that point. Paulinho, who came in during the second half, gave Sporting the lead with a strong header from the corner that followed after Hugo Lloris made a spectacular save on a lovely curling drive from Pedro Porro in the 90th minute ( 1-0, 90th). During this sequence, on yet another Portuguese counterattack, Arthur Gomes attempted to mystify Lloris with a clear low shot that resulted in a 2-0 lead in the 90th minute and three extra minutes.
