Maison Cartier: behind the scenes of a titanic project
At number 13, rue de la Paix, in Paris, the illustrious jeweler’s shop was established, and construction on the current location didn’t begin until 1899. An exclusive tour of a remarkable construction site, which is scheduled to reopen at the end of October.

The completion of the Titanic project comes almost exactly one hundred and twenty-three years to the day from the establishment of Cartier at this illustrious address, the rue de la Paix. Since the protective covers that were covering the facade have been removed, we are now able to see that the storefront has maintained its dark marble that is veined with golden yellow pyrite. An unanticipated location for the time that has developed into an identity throughout the years.

What’s going on inside? Mystery. Before the 4th of November, nothing will be made public. When we imagine that specific decorations would pull the thread of the legacy and keep the spirit of the place alive, we are probably stretching our imagination a bit too far. They are not only the pillars of the vast history of the house but also the witnesses of a thousand anecdotes that they would tell us with glee if given the opportunity. They would make us laugh by picturing the vendors’ discomfort on that day in 1906 when the young Aga Khan had to wait while Louis Cartier attended to John Pierpont Morgan, who was the richest man in the world at the time.
