The mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, warned this Thursday about the recent increase in covid-19 cases due to the “arrival of the peak of the holiday season” and coinciding with the omicron variant, so asked the unvaccinated population to do so now.

“There has recently been an increase in cases (of covid-19) due to the arrival of Christmas and the omicron variant in Miami-Dade and, unfortunately, in the nation and around the world,” Levine Cava said at a press conference at Tropical Park, one of the most frequented vaccination points in the county.

The counselor stressed that it is “critically important” to receive the booster dose against covid-19, those eligible for it, and vaccinate those who have not done so yet.

“As cases of covid-19 continue to increase in the nation and the world, and the peak of the holiday season approaches, it is ‘more critical than ever to get vaccinated and follow all the recommendations to avoid the spread of this disease” Levine Cava insisted.

“Put on the booster dose,” he said, adding that, “unfortunately, the pandemic has not ended despite all the efforts made” by the institutions and medical bodies.

In this context, he highlighted the work carried out in the fight against the virus in this county, an “effort” that has resulted in the “highest vaccination count in Florida and well above the national average

The recommendations of the mayor of Miami-Dade come at a time when the omicron variant of covid-19 has put the United States on alert.

Despite the fact that the delta variant continues to be the predominant one in the United States, representing 96% of cases in the country, compared to 3% for omicron and 1% for other mutations, health authorities expect the second to continue expanding in the coming weeks.

In fact, there are parts of the USA where the percentage of omicron cases is even higher, such as in New York and New Jersey, where it reaches 13%, while in Florida several cases of this variant have already been registered.

The United States, the country in the world most affected by the pandemic, exceeded 800,000 deaths from covid-19 on Tuesday and already registers more than 50 million infections.

“Get vaccinated right here in Tropical Park, where people can get that booster dose. It’s the most important thing you can do to stop the spread of covid-19,” said Levine Cava.

He added that county authorities have signed an “emergency order for hospitals to report daily on the number of cases and beds available,” while providing “mobile vaccination points in the county.
