The Government of Chile offered this Saturday logistical support, both material and human, to Haiti due to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook the country at 08:29 local time (12:29 GMT), according to Chilean Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand .
“The Government of Chile is prepared to quickly assist this emergency and collaborate with the Haitian people in the reconstruction process,” said Allamand through his Twitter account.
Haiti suffered an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 this Saturday that was registered northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud, in the south of the country, and had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS, in English).
“To offer all the aid to that country, the president, Sebastián Piñera has instructed me to make material and human resources available to Haiti, such as the Chilean Firefighters rescue patrol,” added Allamand.
The violent earthquake caused at least 29 deaths and material damage in several departments of the country, according to the Prime Minister of the Caribbean country, Ariel Henry.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami watch that it subsequently lifted.
Henry described the situation as “dramatic”, affirmed that the earthquake caused “enormous damage” in the south of the country and announced that he has mobilized “the entire government team to urgently adopt all the necessary measures” and to assess “the situation in your set “.
