The Mexican government affirmed this Friday that it met its objective of applying at least one dose of the vaccine against covid-19 to the entire adult population that so desired until October.
“There is good news, the commitment to apply, at least one dose, to all Mexicans, women, and men, over 18 years of age has already been fulfilled, we have already advanced a lot,” declared President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in his conference morning press from Campeche, southeast of the country.
The goal is announced as Mexico accumulates almost 3.8 million cases and more than 287,000 deaths from covid-19, the fourth-highest figure in the world in absolute numbers.
Since vaccination began last December, Mexico has applied more than 125.7 million anti covid drugs to 74.4 million people, of which 60.1 million already have the complete scheme, reported Hugo López-Gatell, undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.
This means that 83% of the Mexican population 18 years of age and older have received at least one dose, said López-Gatell, in charge of managing the pandemic in the country.
The missing percentage is attributed to the backwardness, to people who could not attend on the scheduled day of vaccination, to those who went to the United States to get vaccinated, or to remote communities in states such as Chiapas.
“The covid vaccination operation does not stop until we complete all the use of vaccines that is necessary to have, we have to complete the second dose. At this time, 953 municipalities are in operation or programmed in 22 states. We have to expand the operation to the last corner ”, he commented.
The undersecretary reported a sum of 132.2 million drugs received in Mexico.
The country’s portfolio includes US companies Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, Britain’s AstraZeneca, Russia’s Sputnik V, and China’s CanSino, Sinovac, and Sinopharm.
“We have enough vaccines, we contracted almost 250 million doses, this includes almost 10 million doses that were donated and we also thank the United States Government for generous donations that were made in a very timely manner,” said López-Gatell.
For immunization, 14,190 vaccination posts were set up in which 304,805 brigade members participated, said the undersecretary.
The average dose applied has been around 500,000 a day.
“The greatest health crisis that the world has faced in the last 100 years, in the last century, of course, required the largest public health operation that our country has a memory of in the last 100 years,” he said.
The president highlighted the vaccination rates of Quintana Roo, Baja California, and Mexico City.
He also reiterated that immunization for minors has already begun, although not yet in a generalized way.
“The vaccination plan for girls and boys has already started. First, those with chronic diseases, the disabled, or those with different abilities, but we are going to move forward. Always, always in an orderly manner, without influencing, “he indicated.
