Mexico starts booster vaccination campaign for teachers

Mexico started Wednesday the booster vaccination of workers in the educational sector – public and private – with the 2.6 million doses of Moderna donated by the United States Government.

The launch was made through video links, exposed in the daily press conference from the National Palace, in the states of Chiapas, Sonora, Puebla, and Mexico City.

“It has been an enormous effort by the federal government, that we have a little more than 200 million doses (received since the beginning of the vaccination campaign),” said the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, who leads the morning press conferences. for the isolation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, positive for covid.

With this campaign, Mexico hopes to cover a good part of the educational personnel to finish in January, despite the fact that vaccination had to start later than anticipated – it was originally on Saturday – due to a delay in the reception of biologicals.

Although teachers were a priority group, getting the vaccine since April, unions have complained about receiving the Chinese drug from CanSino.

The vaccination of teachers had already begun in the states of Baja California and Colima (north) and in three municipalities of the State of Mexico, but for the federal government, this Thursday means the official starting gun.

In fact, the vast majority of the 32 states will apply the fourth dose between January 12 and 16, although in Campeche, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Guerrero, and Tamaulipas they will begin later.

The regions that will apply a greater number of injections are the State of Mexico and Mexico City, which together will receive about 600,000 doses.

The Mexican government indicated on Tuesday that, so far, 152.31 million doses have been administered, adding 263,819 during the last day.

Of its 126 million inhabitants, 82.48 million have at least one dose of the vaccine and 74.23 million have completed their scheme.
