The US Coast Guard yesterday intercepted a group of 104 Haitians aboard a rustic and crowded boat that was sailing off the coast of South Florida, the institution reported yesterday.

The Coast Guard, who initially reported the interception of some 80 Haitians, said yesterday that the 104 migrants were detained about 18 miles east of Biscayne Bay, off the coast of the city of Miami. The Haitians, all without medical problems when intercepted, were spotted by a “good Samaritan” who alerted authorities, according to the Coast Guard.

This operation comes after the coast guard handed over 12 Haitians to the Bahamas authorities last Friday, discovered in a boat about 3 miles east of Juno Beach, in southeastern Florida.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, on October 1, 2020, the US has intercepted almost 400 Haitians trying to enter the country.
