09.33. THE AIRBORNE CONTAGION OF THE CORONAVIRUS GAINS WEIGHT: “IN A CLOSED ROOM IT WOULD NOT BE ENOUGH TO EVEN KEEP TWO METERS AWAY”

We have all heard of aerosols in coronavirus infection, but do we know what they are? What does airborne transmission mean? It is very difficult for anyone to be clear about it, since the word “aerosol” can refer to different things and, in fact, its definition has changed during the pandemic , as well as its consideration against other forms of contagion. In practice, there are two essential questions whose answer depends on this scientific controversy: when will we remove the mask in the open air? And indoors?

“There continues to be a passionate debate about how exactly the virus is transmitted,” says Stephanie Dancer, a microbiologist at Edinburgh Napier University and author of important papers on SARS-CoV-2. “Some say that the virus contaminates relatively large droplets of saliva or respiratory fluids , which leave the mouth of an infected person and fall to the ground or other surfaces. If the droplets land in your eyes, nose or mouth, you can become infected; or you could touch a surface that houses these drops and transfer the virus to the mucous membranes with your fingers. ”

“Others say – continues Dancer – that the virus is more likely to be transmitted in small aerosols, also produced by an infected person when speaking or breathing . The difference is that, paradoxically, there are more virus particles in a tiny aerosol than in a drop, and besides, the aerosol is too small to fall to the ground. So the cloud of aerosols with viruses is suspended indoors, like a cloud of smoke. ”

In recent days, a group of 24 doctors and virologists had launched an appeal to show their disappointment at the decision to open vaccines with the serum of the Anglo-Swedish company to the youngest, due to the fact that the administration of this vaccine to under 40s, especially women, “may have more risks than benefits, although it rarely causes life-threatening complications.”

In addition, on Wednesday he indicated that “it would be good for the Ministry (of Health) to lead” the process so that, with the displaced card, “it could be vaccinated within the vaccination strategy of each community.”

Some statements that come in the middle of the debate on how to articulate the vaccination strategy this summer, given the possibility that some people pending to receive the second dose may move to another autonomous community other than their residence before being summoned to complete the process.
